You’ve found the perfect job and a great Chicago apartment to call your own. Your move is coming up in two months and you’re still tying down lose ends. Suddenly, your new boss calls out of nowhere and asks if you can start earlier! What do you do?
Don’t say no! Look into temporary housing instead. If the need is for more than a few days, however, you likely won’t want to consider hotels as a viable option. Chances are you’re going to need to look at short-term housing on a lease agreement. And, it’s not impossible to find opportunities for temporary housing in Chicago.
Four Options for Temporary Leases
1. Your new apartment complex – It is possible that the Chicago apartment complex where you intend to lease on a full-time basis will offer apartments for short-term leases. Even if your four bedroom luxury apartment isn’t ready, they might have a two bedroom set up for corporate leases that could get you by for a few weeks.
2. Other Chicago complexes – If your apartment complex doesn’t offer temporary housing, check around with others. Many apartments set aside at least a unit or two to meet the temporary demands of those relocating. Below are apartment complexes in Chicago that offer short term leases at three different price points:
3. Your company – Some companies keep housing on lease all the time just for situations like this. Ask your boss if this is the case. You might have to pay a short-term rental fee, but it will take the worry off your plate.
4. Short term subleases – If all else fails look for short term subleases on Craigslist and other websites like Sublet.com that offer subleasing ads. Someone may be in the same situation as you and is looking for someone to take over their lease for a few months so they can move to a new city as well. Make sure you get a written sublease agreement and that the complex allows residents to sublet.
If you have to settle into short-term housing for a while, it’s sometimes best to look for furnished locations and put your items in storage. This just saves you from packing and unpacking too many times. Also, make sure the lease agreement states your residency as short term and that you understand what’s involved in the fine print. However, month-to-month leases are not uncommon in Chicago, so don’t lose heart.
