All You Need to Know About Training for Your 1st Triathlon

by Sr. Editor on April 18, 2008

Whether you want to gear up for the Chicago marathon or you have your sights set on taking part in an upcoming triathlon, there are some smart things to do in advance of the big day. Chances are if you pace yourself, set your expectation levels on realistic and put your heart into the effort, your dreams will become reality.

The best way to get ready for a triathlon is to start out small. You’ll want to work on each leg of the event through separate workout routines. Start out not by setting your goals on being able to endure the entire event and all the distances involved, but go for shorter runs, swims and rides, instead. Work up slowly to the goals.

To make the most out of triathlon training, it’s wise to START NOW!

1. Start early

Conditioning for a big event does not happen overnight. Many people start their triathlon training months or even a year or so in advance. Take your overall goal and break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. As you go, remember to eat healthy and keep the strength training and cardio workouts going, too.

2. Work on strength training

If you really intend to compete in a full-length triathlon, you’ll want to be a lean, mean fighting machine on the big day. You don’t need a weight lifter’s body, per say, but you do need the strength to handle the running, swimming and riding legs of a big event. Try these workouts for the triathlete hopeful:

3. Improve your cardiovascular endurance

This is key to successfully finishing a triathlon. If you can’t keep your breath during one leg of an event, chances are you will not see the finish line. This is where working up to the goal over the course of weeks or even months is a very smart approach to take. Remember, start out small and keep adding to the routine.

4. Join a local Club

You’ll meet experienced athletes in the Chicago area eager to help you get started doing something they already love. Finding dedicated people to train with will be one of the most important aspects of reaching your goal. Keeping motivated will be easier when you participate in club activities and workouts. Additionally, you’re membership will give you access to invaluable resources, workshops and vendors.

Triathlon training takes hard work, dedication and a willingness not to give up. With the right time and effort, you can be ready to compete in a big event. Who knows, you might be even set to tackle the Chicago marathon at a later date!
