The Navy Pier – located at 600 E. Grand Avenue, this attraction is one that many Chicago residents and tourists alike both adore during all four seasons. Another must see is the Water Tower
The Water Tower – This is the only building in the entire downtown that survived the infamous 1871 fire. The site, located at 800 N. Michigan Ave., has its own museum and visitor center. The Chicago Water Tower was designed and built in 1869 by architect William W. Boyington. The water tower was one of the only buildings within the fire district that survided, many of the buildings in the city south of the Chicago River survived.
The Water Tower is constructed of solid dolomitic limestone from Joliet, Illinois. It was built in a castellated Gothic architectural style. It has a 154 foot tall tower which originally hid a 138 foot tall standpipe used keep the water flowing. Even though the building was designated a national landmark in 1969, it has been three occasions in 1906, 1918 and 1948 when the Chicago Water Tower’s existence was threatened. However, in all cases, the historic building was saved by public outcry and the legend linking it to Chicago before the Great Fire.
A classic attration for families with children: Chicago Children’s Museum
Chicago Children’s Museum – This attraction is free to everyone on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and the first Monday of the month for kids ages 15 and under between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Located at the pier at 700 E. Grand Ave., this is an attraction entire families enjoy taking in.
Other favorite stops for those looking at Chicago apartments include such places as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Adler Planetarium, the city’s many libraries, parks, zoos and historic landmarks.
