How To Create An Outdoor Living Space

by Sr. Editor on May 27, 2008

With the temperatures on the rise and the skies turning blue, chances are you are more than ready to get out of your Chicago apartment and soak up some rays. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune or deal with crowds to do so. In fact, you can create your own personal oasis on your patio by turning it into an ideal outdoor living space for the summer months.

Transforming even the smallest of patios into a viable outdoor living space doesn’t need to take a lot of work or effort. However, it takes a bit of planning and the right outdoor furniture and décor. To get started in making your deck your “spare room” for the summer consider these things:

The space you have – Before you run out and buy outdoor furniture, potted plants and other enhancements, take a good look at the space you have and brainstorm what you can do with it.

The desired function – Some people have enough room and a desire to create almost a full room feel on their decks. They might choose to make their decks outdoor cooking, eating and living spaces for the summer months. Others, whether they are challenged for space or not, might opt to simply create a quiet getaway for reading and thought collecting.

Your budget – This can be a very big deal when creating an outdoor living space. Keep in mind, you really don’t have to spend a fortune to create an enjoyable space. The trick lies in setting a budget and sticking with it. If yours happens to be tight, consider visiting second-hand shops in the Chicago area for outdoor décor and furniture.

Once you have a good idea in mind, there are some steps you might want to take to bring the plan to fruition. They include:

Shopping – With your image of a great outdoor space planted in your mind, start shopping for the right pieces to make it come to life. Outdoor stores, garage sales, second-hand shops and even department stores can all help you reach your goals.

Cleaning – Unless you’ve already done so, clean your deck really well before you get started with the decorating.

The set up – With your deck prepared and your outdoor décor purchased, get started setting it up. Make sure to put potted plants in areas where they’ll receive the right amount of sun and don’t forget at least one comfortable chair. For extra special touches, add in some outdoor décor like a fountain, statues or even just a wind chime or other unique piece.

Soaking up the sun and enjoy Chicago’s warmer days doesn’t mean having to leave home. You can create your own personal oasis by crafting a great outdoor living space.
