Outgrown Your Apartment? It’s Time to Move on Up

by Sr. Editor on June 27, 2008

Moving is generally no fun at all. This can be particularly so if you really love your Chicago apartment and dread the idea of getting a new one. Unfortunately – or fortunately in some cases – it is sometimes necessary to pack up and move on to greener pastures. This is especially the case if you’ve outgrown your place. Sadly, many people who are attached to their Chicago apartments refuse to see the writing on the wall.

That tiny, trendy studio apartment you’ve been renting the past few years may have been a good idea when you were just starting out on your own, but you can’t expect to stay there forever. There are signs you can look for that might indicate it’s time to sweep denial aside and start looking for a new place to call home. To gauge if you’ve outgrown your apartment, look for these warning signs:

Baby in the closet – If you and your honey have a new arrival, but no place to put your bundle of joy, it’s time for a new apartment. Having a new baby and facing the issues that can go along with a growing family often demands more space. It’s not fair to raise junior or a princess without enough space. This is a big indicator that a new place is needed. A studio or a one bedroom apartment is just too small for a family with a new addition.

Spousal concerns – If you’re getting married, it might be time to look for a new apartment. While it’s true in the newlywed days you might enjoy living in cramped quarters, this is likely to soon pass. You’ll both want your space and breathing room. If you can’t fit into your Chicago apartment on your own, your spouse probably won’t be comfortable either. Moving prior to the big day or shortly thereafter is a great way to enjoy a clean start and make your first big decision together.

Puppy love – If you’ve always wanted to have a pet of your own and have finally broken down and made the dream reality, you might find yourself needing more space. Dogs often require more than a one-bedroom apartment or studio can provide. Just make sure in your new apartment search you look for places that are pet friendly.

Cramped for space – A small apartment might be great for saving money when you’re first starting out, but after a while it can pose a problem. If you find yourself falling over your stuff now, it’s probably time to look for a place that offers more room, more storage and enough space to enjoy new furniture and purchases that you’re likely to want down the road.

Moving is never a fun proposition, but sometimes it’s necessary. If you don’t have enough room to turn around in your small apartment, to avoid the future stress of cramped living conditions, you should start looking for a new place.
